It's strawberry season. To be honest, berries aren't my favorite (I’m a texture kind of girl). However, I can’t tell you how many cake orders I’ve received for fresh strawberry cake. The secret to this cake is the fresh strawberry preserve filling (see recipe below). One of my friend’s has ordered it twice and said, “This should be your signature!”
So here in Maryland (we’re not unique, I know), you have several options to get strawberries: the local supermarket, the farmer’s market or a pick your own farm. I must say, I’ve never gone to pick strawberries; however, it is on a list of things to do (it’s not a bucket list!!!). I pride myself on baking from scratch, so why not pick my own fruit? My great grandmother and grandmother did it.
Mission accomplished!!! My mom and I went to Larriland Farms in Woodbine, Md (there are no pick your own farms in Baltimore…sad face). We didn’t know what to expect being “sort of” city girls now, but we had a great time. Even though it was hot, there were a lot of people there. I even got down on my knees and picked (looks like that’s what I was supposed to do haha!!). It’s a good thing I wore black pants because I smashed a few berries with my knees (whoops).
Since I’ve been home I’ve made my preserves and some strawberry jam. It smells delicious in here. I’m so glad I went to the farm. Food has a different feel when you know exactly where it comes from. #farmtotable
